The idea behind the Buffett Cup is that the two teams should include many of the world's finest players from either side of the Atlantic. In the inaugural 2006 match, those playing included Bob Hamman, for 20 years ranked the number one player in the world; Sabine Auken, the number one woman's player, and the then world champions Norberto Bocchi and Giorgio Duboin of Italy.
The teams for the 2008 rematch once again featured two strong line ups, including three representatives of the Norwegian team that won the 2006 European Championships in Pau, France. The American team was led by the formidable sounding partnership of Bob Hamman and Zia Mahmood.
The teams for the 2010 match are in the same strong tradition, with four members of the United States team that triumphed at last year's World Championships in Sao Paulo (Hamman-Zia, Meckstroth-Rodwell) and a welcome return for two pairs (Duboin-Sementa and Nunes-Fantoni) who finished second in that match.
