Buffett Cup 2012 - The Latest

USA Wins 2012 Buffett Cup Challenge Match

It doesn’t get any exciting than the finish of the 2012 Buffett Cup Challenge Match.  Team USA technically “won” the event in regulation time but with the addition of the three 7-board segments in a team format, it was anyone’s event to win.  Heading into the overtime Team Event, USA needed to win just one of the three segments to win the event (again).  Match 1 went to Europe. Match 2 was a tie. But then in Match 3, Team USA won a decisive victory 5.5 – 1.5 to claim the Buffett Cup Trophy once again.

A video of the final match.

Here are All the glorious details of the event.

Date of 2012 Buffett Cup Set

December 1st 2011

The date for the 2012 Buffett Cup match, the fourth in the series, has now been set. It will take place from September 10th to 13th 2012 – and where better for it to be played than in Omaha, Nebraska, home of the man whose name adorns the cup itself, Warren Buffett (pictured)? The venue will be the ideal setting for this now well-established transatlantic challenge match, designed to pit the best players from the United States and Europe against each other.

As on previous occasions the two teams of twelve players will play a mixture of teams, pairs and individual matches to help establish the winning side – a format loosely modeled on that of the prestigious Ryder Cup in golf. The running score now stands at 2 to 1 in favour of the Americans. The competition will again be broadcast live on Vugraph at Bridge Base Online.

Team USA Win The 2010 Buffett Cup

Thursday 16 September 2010

The final day of the 2010 competition, held at the Mishkin Manor in Wales, started with Team USA having a convincing lead of 87 to 69, needing only 13 more points to win the Cup and take a 2-1 lead in the series, held every two years on alternate sides of the Atlantic.  There were just seven individual rounds to go, so losing every round 2-4 would be enough.

In the event they didn't relax and continued to play very well.  A 4-2 loss in the first round of the day was followed by three 4-2 wins, so they passed the winning post of 100 points with three rounds to go

So hearty congratulations to Team USA, led by Bob Hamman, who were fielding a very strong team.  Their victory in the 2010 Buffett Cup was very well-deserved.

The final score was:    Team USA 109         Team Europe 89

Team Europe win the 2008 Buffett Cup

The second head to head challenge match between Europe's top twelve bridge players and their USA counterparts took place in Kentucky in September 2008 and resulted in a convincing win for the Europeans, who thereby gained revenge for their defeat in the opening event in Dublin in 2006. The Buffett Cup is a transatlantic challenge match named after the legendary American investor and bridge enthusiast Warren Buffett.
